Legend tells us that around 352 a wealthy family of Rome vowed to donate their possessions to Our Lady. She appeared to them in a dream, requesting them to build a church and that the exact location would be marked in snow. During that hot August summer, it miraculously began to snow on the Esquiline hill in Rome and this is where a one of the oldest and most beautiful churches was built basilica in Our Lady’s honor. The church was named the Basilica of Mary Major and every year on August 5th a beautiful custom is kept to commemorate the miraculous snowfall.
Each figure is created from a mixture of resin and marble powder which is blended to create a material which is poured into the master mold. It is sculpted with intricate detail by hand & then inspected for any flaws.
